The Moderating Effect of Organization-based Self-esteem on Emotional Regulation Difficulties in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Among Firefighters

In today¡¯s highly industrialized society, the role of firefighters in disasters and accidents are gradually increasing, and the likelihood of frequently experiencing traumatic events is on the rise. The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effect of organization-based self-esteem on emotional regulation difficulties in post-traumatic stress symptoms among firefighters. The subjects of this study were 478 firefighters working in the Gangwon and Gyeonggi provinces. Self-report questionnaires to measure difficulties in emotional regulation, post-traumatic stress disorder, and organization-based self-esteem were utilized. Primary results are as follows: The moderating effect of organization-based self-esteem significantly impacted difficulties in emotional regulation of post-traumatic stress symptoms. In other words, while the effect of difficulties in emotional regulation on post-traumatic stress symptoms is positive when the organization-based self-esteem is high, if the organization-based self-esteem is low, it does not help the post-traumatic stress symptoms of firefighters. Implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.
